Mr Black was appointed as full time NHS Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) (Otorhinolaryngology) and Thyroid Surgeon to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast in 2014, having worked as a full time NHS Consultant ENT & Thyroid Surgeon East Kent University Hospitals Foundation Trust since July 2007. In 2015 Mr Black was appointed as Programme Director for ENT training in Northern Ireland.

His undergraduate training was in the Queen’s University of Belfast Medical School (QUB), graduating in 1993 (M.B, B.Ch., BAO). He underwent basic surgical training on the Belfast Surgical Rotation including a year working in the Department of Anatomy as Anatomy Demonstrator to the medical school QUB.

He was admitted as a Fellow to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1999 (FRCS Otol.). He was subsequently appointed as Specialist Registrar in the South Thames Rotation, London in 2000, rotating through Great Ormond Street Hospital, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals between 2000-2006.

Mr Black was awarded his second Fellowship by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2005 in Head & Neck Surgery (FRCS ORL-HNS). He subsequently attended the Memorial Sloane Kettering Hospital, New York and The European Hospital Georges Pompidou, Paris to further his training in his subspecialist interest in thyroid surgery. In 2006 he was appointed as Head & Neck Fellow, Christchurch Public Hospital and Senior Lecturer to the University of Otago Medical School, New Zealand for 1 year until his return to the United Kingdom as Consultant ENT (Otorhinolaryngology) and Thyroid Surgeon to East Kent University Hospitals Foundation Trust in July 2007. Mr Black worked as a full time NHS Consultant in East Kent until his return home to Northern Ireland in 2014 upon appointment to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.

Mr Black was admitted to the Specialist Register by the General Medical Council (Roll number 4039853) in 2007. 

Mr Black is fully trained in all aspects of Ear, Nose and Throat surgery with extensive experience both in paediatric and adult ENT disease. His subspecialist interests are thyroid (including minimally invasive thyroid surgery), salivary gland, voice, paediatric, snoring and sinus surgery.
